New Battlefield 3 details revealed

7 February 2011

Speaking to DICE senior gameplay designer Alan Kertz, Techspotlight has managed to compile a list of juicy new details regarding the developer’s upcoming multiplayer FPS, Battlefield 3.

New info

– There will be no tracer darts in Battlefield 3. Tracer darts have been used in previous Battlefield games to magnetise vehicles and make them easier to hit with RPGs.

– Like Bad Company 2, bullets will be effected by gravity over longer distances. However, the new system is much deeper than Bad Company 2’s.

– Knives and dogtags will return.

– There will be no ziplines or grappling hooks.

– Friendly fire will be turned off by default, but will be adjustable.

– The PC version of Battlefield 3 will allow up to 64 players online on a single server. The console versions will be limited to 24 players.

– Bad Company 2’s spotting system will return in Battlefield 3.

– ‘Drop-shooting’ (also known as ‘dolphin driving’) will not work in Battlefield 3. Drop shooting is when players drop to the ground when firing on enemies to make themselves harder to shoot.

– Prone will be on all three platforms.

Stuff we already knew

– Battlefield 3 will feature jets.

– Playable locations will include Tehran and New York.

– The game will run on the Frostbite 2 engine.

– There will be a single player and a cooperative campaign.

– The Limited Edition release will include the Back to Karkand DLC, which will port Battlefield 2 maps into Battlefield 3. This DLC will be available to purchase about a month after release.

– Battlefield 3 will be out towards the end of 2011, and will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
