Call of Juarez sequel gets modern setting

8 February 2011

In a move which defies expectation, Ubisoft has announced that the next Call of Juarez game – Call of Juarez: The Cartel – will be set in modern day Juarez, Mexico. The game is due for release midway through this year, and will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Previous Call of Juarez games have been western themed shooters, so it remains to be seen just how much of the series’ identity will remain intact as players traverse modern day Los Angeles and Juarez.

The game will centre around the gang warfare which currently plagues modern day Juarez and its surrounding areas.

If anything, early screen shots are reminiscent of a scene we’d expect to see in a Grand Theft Auto game. The decision seems particularly odd, following the ridiculous success of Red Dead Redemption, which could only have left gamers craving a little more virtual cowboys and Indians.
