According to Bloomberg, electronics giant LG has petitioned the International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban the sale of PlayStation 3s in the USA.
The bid comes after Sony levelled a similar charge at LG, claiming that various LG phones are infringing on Sony Patents. Sony is also pursuing a civil case concerning LG Blu-ray disk players.
Now LG is hitting back, and is making similar claims against Sony, even going as far as to seek cash compensation for the unauthorized use of its inventions. The Korean company claims to be in possession of four patents which various Sony devices are infringing upon.
The PS3 in particular uses technology supposedly owned by LG that provides “a way of dealing with multiple data streams, such as different camera angles, as well as a system to reproduce data that’s stored on a read-only device.”
If the ITC rules in favour of LG, then it has the power to ban the sale of Sony’s console in the USA, and there could even be grounds for pursuing the case on a global level. However, it would be unusual for the ITC to rule in favour of banning a device as popular as the PS3.
