Following yesterday’s official statement of imminent retribution from hacktivist and lolcat hivemind Anonymous, the PlayStation Network as well as the US PlayStation Blog, browser-based PlayStation Store, and PlayStation.com have gone intermittently offline.
While Sony has not acknowledged the site problems, the company has issued a message about the console’s online network, saying only that, “PSN [is] currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
Anonymous had threatened action over Sony’s treatment of PS3 hackers GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo, which had been “deemed wholly unforgivable”.
Interestingly enough, it turns out there’s been a bit of a dissention among Anonymous’s own ranks recently, with breakaway faction Backtrace Security denouncing the other guys as “arrogant sociopaths”.
Backtrace Security member A5h3r4 told Gawker that his erstwhile comrades were “Acting first, not thinking of the consequences. They’re recruiting children. I am a pretty far left person – I believe in privacy and free expression, but Anonymous is a vigilante group now. A mob without conscience. And I worry they will radicalise even more. In short, I believe they’re on their way to becoming a genuine threat.”
