One joke about PC gamers needing to switch to a PlayStation 4 and you are guaranteed to get the comments rolling in, as was the case following our recent PS4 for under R5,500 article.
The arguments against a need to switch were fair, notably in the case of really cheap games on Steam, and the modular nature of PCs which allows for necessity upgrades.
Although I paid over R600 for Destiny on the PS4 (with a Kalahari discount voucher), and only $2 for Hotline Miami on Steam, I cannot agree with the PC component pricing argument.
“For R5,500 you can get a new GTX 970”, or “my (insert graphics card) is more powerful than the PS4’s GPU” may be valid statements, but the rest of your PC did not fall from the sky into your lap. You had to pay for it.
Unfortunately, the master race rule MyGaming, so I feel this is an argument I cannot win. However, what I can do is poke fun at you PC gamers until Jan decides to ban me from writing articles.
So, you would rather let a blind man shave your balls than game on a PS4? Well, I would rather have a PS4, a TV, and a small, but diverse, game collection than a single graphics card.
PC components which cost more than a console gaming setup
For the sake of the article I priced a PS4, a 40-inch LED TV, and 5 newish, big-release games.
- PS4 – R5,475 from Orange.com
- 40-inch Samsung LED TV – R4,999 from Makro
- Fifa 15 – R679
- Far Cry 4 – R799
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – R679
- The Evil Within – R699
- The Last of Us: Remastered – R599
Total: R13,929
Seeing as I want to give the PC crowd a fair chance, let’s call it R14,000 and take a look at single and paired PC components which cost the same or more.
Note that the following examples can play a grand total of zero games in their current form and configuration.
MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Black 6GB – R15,555
Sapphire Radeon R9 295X2 8GB – R20,713
Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD and Corsair AXi 1500W Titanium PSU – R14,580
Asus X99 Motherboard and Intel Haswell-E i7 – R14,000
- Intel Haswell-E i7-5930K 3.50GHz
- ASUS X99 Deluxe LGA2011-3
Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM – R22,525
Asus ROG Swift 27-inch LED Monitor – R15,686
One more thing – do you know what the system requirements of a PlayStation 4 game are?
- Minimum requirements: Have a PlayStation 4
- Recommended requirements: Have a PlayStation 4 and box of Romany Creams
PC gamers, come at me bro – the comments and forum are open.
PS: You know I love you guys.

There is no comparison between PC and a console, its a stupid argument.
In three- five years when you’re still stuck with your crusty joystick, low battery light flashing, you will be crying your eyes out at the Games being played on PC.
Consoles look graphically great now but as we have seen with the PS1 and Ps2 and Ps3, time changes that and gaming technology moves faster than consoles.
The PS4 is destined to be as irrelevant as all its predecessors and my lovely towering gaming beast is forever evolving into something more beautiful and powerful like a goddam TRANSFORMER.
So dry your tears and go back to the corner.
Consoles are for students and children.
PCs are for men.
