Japan has begun broadcasting TV in 8K resolution ahead of the Olympics starting in Rio de Janeiro this weekend, reports CNET.
NHK, also known as the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, started 4K and 8K ultra high-definition test broadcasting earlier this week.
It plans to broadcast the opening ceremony, swimming, and athletics in 4K and 8K.
As the footage is purely being broadcast in UHD, conventional televisions and tuners will not be able to receive the signal.
NHK has already planned special “broadcasting centres” so that the public can watch the broadcasts in UHD.
