The 10 most pirated movies of 2016

3 January 2017

TorrentFreak has revealed that Deadpool was the most pirated movie of 2016.

Pirated copies of the American superhero film first appeared early February triggering millions of downloads during the months that followed. Even today, thousands of people are still actively sharing it.

“Superheroes and comics are doing very well on torrent sites this year” noted TorrentFreak, as the top three is completed by ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Captain America Civil War”.

“And further down the list we also find ‘X-Men Apocalypse’ and ‘Suicide Squad.”

However TorrentFreak noticed that while there may be a correlation between movies perceived to be “geeky” and those that were pirated most, a larger correlation can be drawn between between piracy and box-office sales.

Deadpool made a massive $783 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of just $58 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Second place Baman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also performed well bringing in $868 million worldwide.

There is one noticeable exception to this trend however, Independence Day: Resurgence was considered a flop “only” bringing in $387 million worldwide.
