Sonic 2 approaches $300 million at box office – but Super Mario Bros movie is delayed

Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s international box office earnings are approaching $300 million.

The first Sonic movie managed to gross $319.7 million worldwide during its run, and the sequel is expected to surpass this figure.

The movie’s domestic American Box office has also reached the milestone of $146 million, officially making it the highest-grossing domestic release of a video game film.

In other video game movie news, Nintendo has announced that the Super Mario Bros animated movie has been delayed till 2023. The movie is now slated to release on 7 April in North America and 28 April in Japan.

The animated film, which stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, was initially slated for a December 2022 release.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the Mario series creator, apologised for the delay but stated the movie would be worth the wait.

Sony Pictures also revealed at CinemaCon that Venom 3 and another Ghostbusters movie are in production.

According to Variety, Venom 3 has been greenlit following the success of Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and the next Ghostbusters movie will be a follow-up to the 2021 reboot Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

No further details were shared on either movie.
