The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced that the E3 event will officially return both in-person and online in 2023.
E3 has not taken place for three consecutive years now, and game publishers have largely moved to host their own online events as a result.
Examples of these adapted events for 2022 include previous E3 host Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest on 9 June and the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on 12 June.
Despite this move from game publishers, E3 organizers still believe that there is a desire in the gaming community to come together in person to experience the latest reveals and announcements in one place.
“We’re excited about coming back in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” ESA president Stan Pierre-Louis told The Washington Post.
“As much as we love these digital events, and as much as they reach people and we want that global reach, we also know that there’s a really strong desire for people to convene — to be able to connect in person and see each other and talk about what makes games great,” he added.
In the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, E3 saw an average of 50,000 gamers in attendance at their event, which is traditionally held in Los Angeles, California.
Official dates for the E3 2023 event and other details will be announced closer to the end of the year.
