Guy Beahm, better known as the streamer Dr Disrespect, announced last year that he was founding “a AAA game studio” with former Call of Duty creative strategist Robert Bowling and Halo 5 multiplayer designer Quinn Delhoyo.
This studio, called Midnight Society, revealed in a recent blog post that it’s developing a AAA competitive PvPvE first-person shooter game — code named Project Moon.
The game will be a free-to-play multiplayer FPS made in Unreal Engine 5.
Project Moon is described as a PvPvE raid game, much like Hunt: Showdown or Escape from Tarkov where you keep the loot from every match you survive, but lose everything you brought into a match if you die.
“Our high-level gameplay goals are to capture the essence of arena shooter level design with the scale and scope of battle royale player counts, and the session-to-session gameplay mechanics of extraction-based shooters,” said Midnight Society.
The blog post also announced that Midnight Society is offering beta access to the new game in the form of a $50 (R846) NFT Founders Pass.
This pass will offer playable “Snapshots” of the game to founders every six weeks, which will then be followed by a discussion surrounding the design of each weapon, balancing, and other core gameplay loops featured in the snapshots.
This feedback after each Snapshot drop will be used to shape the contents of the game.
“We firmly believe that communities deserve access to games currently in development, to begin playing games earlier, and offer feedback to help steer development,” said Midnight Society.
Despite the concerns surrounding the use of the word NFT, it has been noted that the game will not be play-to-earn and that players will not be required to partake in any kind of NFT technology to play or enjoy the game.
The NFT Founders Pass is the only mention of NFTs surrounding the project, which could suggest that Midnight Society may implement some kind of NFT cosmetic economy similar to CS: GO.
While a release date is still unknown, more details about the game are expected to be revealed at the founders’ event in Los Angeles on 29 July 2022.
