Game of Thrones pirates are being targeted

Game of Thrones

There is a new phishing scam targeting Internet service providers (ISPs) and online pirates, TorrentFreak reported.

The scam is based around sending sending fake copyright infringement notices to ISPs, scaring them into forwarding them along to their subscribers.

As the notice is being forwarded by their ISP, users are also mistakenly tricked into believing that the scam is real.

One notice claiming to be from HBO threatened possible legal action unless you pay a “settlement”.

“You have 72 hours to access the settlement offer and settle online. If you fail to settle, the claim(s) will be referred to our attorneys for legal action. At that point the original settlement offer will no longer be an option and the amount will increase as a result of us having to involve our attorneys,” the notice said.

The scam is not limited to the United States, with service providers in the UK and Australia informing TorrentFreak that they have received similar fake notices.
