What we’re playing this weekend (14-15 May)

13 May 2011

James Etherington Smith

What’s this – no games to review this weekend? What is the world coming to!? This is probably a good thing because I have rekindled my love for an old-flame who’s just had a significant makeover – check out my Mortal Kombat 9 review.

Commandos 2

Also, having played through the fantastic Portal 2 co-op game twice, it’s probably time to finish the last leg of the engrossing single-player experience. Finally, I grabbed the Commandos collection during Steam’s Mid-week Madness sale, so myself and some friends will be reliving the good old days of co-operatively foiling the machinations of the third Reich.

Nic Simmonds

I caved and bought the Men of War collection earlier this week on a Steam sale. I am assured that it’s one of the most unique and worthwhile strategy franchises around, so hopefully I’ll get a chance to delve in deep this weekend. My interest in Mount & Blade is beginning to wane slightly, but I am feeling a distinct pull back to Shogun 2 – hopefully I’ll be able to resist it so that I can justify caving to the aforementioned Steam sale.

Men of War

Tarryn van der Byl

It’s Friday? OMG IT’S FRIDA-

(We’ve had no further contact. But word on the street is that Tarryn has a date lined up with a total beefcake this weekend.)

Chris Kemp

So my visiting parents brought many a gift from home, including REAL chocolate, biltong, and of course, bronchitis. So what better way to heal than stay indoors and play games all weekend? Luckily the bout of illness has fallen in line with my first weekend in a long time where I actually have a lot of time to myself. So to ease the headache I’ll be crushing skulls in Crysis 2 (in preparation for the inevitable showdown with Tarryn), clearing the congestion with some gunsmoke from the last couple of hours of Bulletstorm and keeping the mind fresh with some Starcraft 2. I’ll be sure to take each at least 3 times a day, and call you in the morning.

Okay, I will admit, last week’s decision to play Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel was a bad one – the game was trash. JRPGs, I mourn for thee.

So, this past week I have been struggling to find something I actually felt like playing. My choices boiled down to Demons Souls, Monster Hunter 3 Tri, Borderlands or Titan Quest. I decided to go for a mixture of two.

Titan Quest

This weekend I will be playing primarily Monster Hunter 3 Tri with some Titan Quest on the side, when I feel like something a little slower.

Dan Parmenter

This weekend I’m getting into Game Found At Back Of Cupboard, a title that disappeared into the recesses of my disorganized closet some years ago and has since emerged begging me to savour its dated graphics. I’ll also be logging a good few hours with D-Grade Movie Tie-In, an overlooked gem that, despite abysmal reviews, has really, really superb box art. Finally, if time permits, I’ll round off this gaming bonanza with Already Completed This Bloody Thing Twice, a title positively brimming with before-seen excitement and more than a healthy dose of deja vu.

Whew, what a line-up, hey? It’s a good thing the PSN is still down else I’d be forced to play Infamous 2.
