South African games release schedule – August

1 August 2011

Welcome to the middle of the year, a time particularly renown among gamers for being deadly quiet in terms of big releases, as most publishers hold on to their big guns in order to cash in on the Christmas rush.

Last month was particularly dry, with the only game worth mentioning being Call of Juarez: The Cartel, which ended up being rather disappointing.

This month things are looking a little better, mostly thanks to Deus Ex: Human Revolution which looks amazing. PC Gamer has already published a review of the game, awarding it 94/100. Then again, PC Gamer also gave Dragon Age 2 94/100

Then there is Age of Empires Online, which is being released digitally as well as to retail. The digital version will be free, whereas the retail version will cost about R95 and include various extra in-game items, such as rare and epic items, special advisors, and a hotkey reference card. Sounds like the free digital version is the way to go, then.

Rugby fans will finally get a new rugby game to sink their teeth into on 26 August, with Rugby World Cup 2011. Rugby World Cup 2011 boasts full licensing for the Springbok rugby team, as well as various other international teams, with the two most notable exclusions being the Wallabies and All Blacks. Rugby World Cup will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Finally, PC gamers will finally get their hands on Call of Juarez: The Cartel, although following the game’s disappointing reception on console, this is less of a big deal than we hoped it would be. More exciting for PC gamers will be the release of From Dust, which will be available on Steam from 17 August for $14.99 (R105).
