Might & Magic: Heroes VI review roundup

18 October 2011

The latest iteration of Ubisoft’s iconic Heroes of Might and Magic series is hitting SA retail this week Friday, exclusively on PC. The game is already available to purchase on Steam, where there is also a playable demo.

Developed by Black Hole Entertainment (Warhammer: Mark of Chaos), the sixth instalment in the Heroes of Might and Magic series makes some interesting game design changes, including a simplification of the resource system, and an overhaul to the standard spells, skills, heroes, abilities, units and building layout, which has remained fairly constant in the last few releases.

A number of reviews are up and for the most part critics have been pleased, if not blown away. Holding a Metacritic score of 78/100, Might & Magic: Heroes VI has received review scores mostly in the mid 80’s, with just a few lower scores dragging down the average. We hope to have a review of our own up in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, here is what other publications have had to say.

Might & Magic Heroes VI is a solid installment of the popular turn-based strategy series, probably one of the best. (English translation) Read more

Atomicmpc 75/100

The game’s CGI intro, of a heavily armoured swordsman kicking all kinds of undead and demon butt, is fantastic, but it really tells the player a big fat porky. There is approximately zero of that kind of action in the game, and the titular heroes get even less to do. Sure, their fancy battlefield tricks can make or break a battle, but these heroes don’t actually do anything. The real grunt work is done by, well, grunts, and even they’re limited to basically being fancy chess-pieces, which is the other part of the game that literally leaves me cold… Read more

Cheat Code Central 4.2/5

This is a huge, well-made title that stays true to the roots of the series without throwing in the towel and becoming a straight-up nostalgia trip. It can be punishing at times, and its elaborate plot is a spectacular misfire thanks to the horrendous voice acting, but it’s a must-play for Might & Magic fans.

Metro Game Central 6/10

Most British gamers will find it unbearably obtuse and slow-winded but there’s a depth of content and gameplay here that will still find its fans. Read more

RTS GURU 7/10

Even though UPlay keeps pissing me off to no end, I find myself steadily returning to the game, even if it means replaying several turns each time I get booted. In a lot of ways it brings back great memories from the earlier days of the franchise, and in others it feels updated and modernized. Sure, some of the changes are hits and some are misses, and dealing with UPlay is a major migraine inducing mess if you have a less that reliable internet connection, but when it’s all said and done, Heroes 6 is a solid entry to the franchise and one I’ve been waiting on for a while now.
