Debriefing: 2upGamers launch event

7 November 2011

What do you get when you take one Glenn Alexander, one Hylton Arendse, one Ashley O’Neill, and one Zaida Kamish, and put them together?

No, not the Power Rangers (come on, there are five Power Rangers, everybody knows that), but 2upGamers, an intergalactic superforce of megastuff and ultrathings!

Most immediately, that’s a group promoting gaming in Cape Town and around the country, but they’ve got plans to get their own spaceship later.

On Friday 4 November, 2upGamers had its official inaugural event at the Rygersdal Sports Club in Rondebosch, and I went because I was told there would be free pizza.

For the media people, anyway. Everybody else had to pay, lol.

As it turned out, there was also a talk by MWEB’s Desmond “bosbvok” Kurz about the company’s new gaming initiatives and free uncapped trials for everybody.

This was followed by a talk about Kalahari.com’s gaming initiatives by category manager Ramone Pickover, and free R100 vouchers for everybody. So really, if you weren’t there, nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah.

We’ll be bringing you a Q&A what’s-what with the 2upGamer guys and girl pretty soon, but in the meantime, here’s everything else you missed out on…

Two of the guys from Cape Town Showdown, Ashraf and Ryan, were there to play Marvel versus Capcom and remind everybody else how crap we are at fighting games and how we’ll never be as good as them. :<

I’m not really sure what that red blur is either, but I think it looks kind of cool.

That’s Microsoft’s snazzy new Wireless Speed Wheel, which make a surprise appearance at the event ahead of its official launch this week. This guy totally nailed it.

That guy on the left is Hadlee Simons. He’s a Gears of War player, so he’s really cool.

Speaking of Gears of War, it’s the Gears of War board game! And Martin, Jason, and Christo. And a beer. Er, and I think that’s Hadlee in the back there. Again. What a pro photo bomber.
