Megarom's Modern Warfare 3 launch battle report

8 November 2011

Gamers sort of have the reputation of being in-doorsy folk – what with our main hobby taking place predominantly seated in front of TV screens and monitors.

But the nice guys over at Megarom decided it was time for a few gamers, at least, to head out into the wilderness and celebrate the launch of Modern Warfare 3 here in SA.

9am launch day, Megarom piled a bunch of journalists and industry players into Modern Warfare 3-branded Jeeps, and took us on a road trip to our “top secret” location – Gerotek Test Facilities in West Pretoria.

After a quick introduction by Megarom’s Devon Stanton, we were split into three teams – Alpha, Bravo and Charlie – and briefed on our mission for the day:

Each team would start the day at designated points – each point having a different task relating in some way to Modern Warfare 3.

I was put into Alpha team – and our starting point was the game room.

What an awesome start to the day – to get your hands on Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer, playing on 37-inch Samsung LED screens with headsets.

To my surprise – being a complete MW3-n00b of the nth degree – I didn’t totally suck at the game; with a slow start (and being frag-bait of note) – I eventually got into the swing of things, and managed to get a few kills in.

We played several different multiplayer modes, including team deathmatch (we won!), capture the flag (we won again!) and free for all (I placed 7th…out of 8).

We’d barely gotten to grips with the game, when we were whisked off to designated point 2 – the shooting range.

Given a paintball gun and a mask, we were told to pair up and prepare to run a small target course – each guy was given 2 shots to hit 5 different targets in the quickest time possible.

Poor Alex over at eGamer had the misfortune of being teamed up with me.

Despite my running like a girl, and shooting a few misses, we managed to complete the course in 3 minutes – which wasn’t enough to beat the best time of 1.41 accomplished by Charlie Team.

Of course, no one beat Alpha team at point 3 of the course, which saw Monster Energy drink tasking us to guide our blind-folded teammates through a “minefield” – and then figure out a way to get rid of a “toxic substance” through the clever use of ropes.

Truth be told, I just hung back and let the experts do their thing – after all, someone had to document the event, just in case something went awry.

Done with objective 3, we were once again transported back to home base – but not before taking the detour through the bundus – which put the Jeeps through their paces on steep inclines and tough terrain – which is exactly what Gerotek is for.

The day rounded off with a suprise prize-giving (I never won anything – if only we had known…), a free lunch (perks of the job) and some MW3 swag – just to top off a great day in that outdoors thingy.

While the aim of the day and each objective was to teach us about technical co-ordination, gun skills and team communication, respectively – the most important lesson I learned was this:

Wear sunscreen.

Seriously – that outdoors thing is a hot place!
