MyGaming’s Top 10 Games of 2011

Where was I this time last year? Did I accomplish all the goals I set out for myself? What could I have done better? And of course, what were my favourite games?

Everyone will have their own list of favourites from the year, and each MyGaming staff member is no different. Using an advanced points system, we combined each MyGaming writer’s top ten games of the year lists, and devised an aggregate top ten.

So without further ado, these are MyGaming’s top ten games of 2011.

1.    Portal 2

Portal 2 is a product of genius on every level. Intricate, varied and complex level design combined with almost frustratingly simple gameplay make it accessible yet challenging.

2.    Deus Ex: Human Revolution

There was a lot riding on Human Revolution. It is the long awaited reboot to one of gaming’s most respected franchises, and for the most part Eidos Montreal did a great job of delivering a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging sci-fi RPG experience.

3.    Batman: Arkham City

Once again, Rocksteady delivered an absolute gem, showing the world that bridging the gap between comics and games can be done successfully.

4.    Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 combines arguably the most technically stunning visuals ever delivered with some amazingly realised sound effects. The maps are dynamic, varied, balanced and interesting, and they deliver a scale that is unprecedented.

On top of that the game is ridiculously fun to play on a basic shoot-stuff level, and offers a deep levelling system that I’m sure will keep gamers well invested for months, if not years to come.

5.    Skyrim

Despite its bugs, Skyrim has been a hit with gamers and the gaming media large. It’s massive open world and endless gameplay possibilities make it one of our favourite games of 2011.

6.    Dead Space 2

While it was a little more action driven that its predecessor, Dead Space 2 managed to deliver a very solid, compelling and atmospheric action-horror experience.

7. Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 delivered more of what the franchise is famous for: over the top action, butch characters, and a solid multiplayer component. It also boasts arguably the best story and narrative out of the GoW trilogy.

8. Uncharted 3

Although it wasn’t quite as well received as Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3 managed to impress gamers and critics alike. MyGaming’s PS3 fraternity was not immune to its charms.

9. Minecraft

Various MyGaming staff members have been playing this game for over a year, but it’s official release towards the end of the year made it eligible for game of the year nominations. Minecraft is one of the most innovative games released in recent years, and offers virtually endless hours of engrossing and addictive gameplay.

10. The Witcher 2

The Witcher 2 offered rich and varied locations, an enjoyable combat system, great characters and a solid story. It was easily one of 2011’s best RPGs.
