Games you can play this week

This week, gamers will get the opportunity to tear up two large, but very different cities. The sand-torn ruins of Dubai and the bustling streets of New York City await us.

Players who are happy in army gear will be excited with Spec Ops: The Line, while those who feel more comfortable in skin-tight spandex have undoubtedly been counting the days for The Amazing Spider-man to swing in.

Spec Ops: The Line

2K and Yager’s sand-filled third-person shooter seems to have been on the horizon of release forever. Spec Ops: The Line has already had a good step with gamers enjoying the PC and console demo, along with MyGaming, who’ve had some extensive hands-on time with The Line.

Loosely based upon Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Spec Ops the line features soldiers who have to endure the harsh realities of war and the human condition. The Line also presents players with the occasional moral choice, such as rescuing civilian hostages versus obtaining crucial information – the outcome of which will initiate different gameplay paths, such as a stealth section versus a brutal gunfight. These choices only have an effect in the moment, but one can consider them as adding to the overall arc of the characters.

The surroundings also play a pivotal role as players battle their way through post-sanstorm-apocalyptic Dubai and are able to use sand to their advantage, such as shooting out a window to bury enemies. The dangers also apply to the players though, as the tough conditions could also lead to your own demise.

The Amazing Spider-man

Most gamers have been burned by movie-to-game adaptations way too many times. With the exception of a few, movie tie-ins continue to disappoint by feeling rushed and tacked-on in order to meet the release schedule of their big-screen counterpart.

So without putting too much faith and hype into the new Amazing Spider-Man game, Beenox look to have captured what a great Spidey game should entail, giving us a throwback to one of the best movie games of all time, Spider-Man 2.

Like the movie, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to reboot and reinvigorate the Spider-Man name, by returning players to the open-world environment of New York, with free-roaming web-swinging and new Web Rush mechanic, which allows players to freeze time and plot their next move, resulting in quick and fluid traversal throughout the city.

The game will obviously feature some of the web-head’s most infamous enemies, such as Rhino and Iguana, Scorpion and Felicia Hardy.
