PC gamers have never had a lack of quality games. Topping the “best games of all time” lists seem to be PC exclusives that have redefined and shaped the industry over the last couple generations of gaming.

But what are the top rated PC games of all time? Aggregating the scores of Metacritic and Gamerankings (despite the community being torn on their existence), the highest scoring games that have been keeping gamers clicking are:

PC gamers expected a lot from the Baldur’s Gate sequel, which was fair given the series’ strong debut. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn marked a triumphant return for BioWare and proved that the studio knew what they were doing in the RPG department. The deep RPG elements were unparalleled for its time, raising the bar in the genre for competitors to scratch their heads over.

For a game to stand out in 2007 is quite the achievement, as 2007 was said to be one of the best years in gaming ever. The original Bioshock injected a new level of creativity and diversity needed in the FPS genre, with the brand new setting – the underwater city of Rapture. Players could combine spells and shooting combat, along with a gorgeous art style, which resulted in an incredibly unique experience.

A scientific accident kicked off the memorable experience that was the original Half-Life. 1998 brought us the PC classic from Valve, and being relatively unknown at that point in time, Valve surprised everyone by showing the industry how an FPS adventure should be made. The game also added a strong sci-fi universe around the game, which found new branches in the form of Portal.

The Orange Box is a little bit of a cheat. It’s Valve combining three of their babies into one box for the price of a single game – and it was excellent. Half Life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 and the surprise hit of 2007, Portal, made up the deal, which showed Vavle’s true potential and bigger ambition beyond that of Half-Life.

Once again, Valve managed to up-the-ante by bringing a sequel to (at the time of its release) the best game on PC, Half-Life. The follow-up continued the story of the crowbar-wielding engineer Gordon Freeman, as he had to survive City 17, which has been turned into a dystopian stronghold. Half-Life 2 introduced unparalleled graphics, a relative physics system and a great story – a solid combination that became incredibly easy to admire.
