Best country for online gaming: SA versus the world

South Korea tops the list of countries in terms of quality internet connections, followed by Romania, Hong Kong, Latvia, and Belarus. Of the 64 countries measured, South Africa comes in at number 47. This is according to the latest Ookla Quality Index statistics.

For online gamers, an internet connection with consistently low latency and minimal data packet loss is paramount.

Many games can operate well over a low bandwidth connection, but if the pings are high and packets are lost in the ether, the quality of the game is impacted terribly.

So where in the world can you get the best gaming experience possible?

To find out we turned to Ookla and its suite of Net Index tools.

One of the values measured by Net Index is the Household Broadband Quality Index, which is based on recent test results from Pingtest.net. “This index compares and ranks consumer broadband quality around the globe,” Ookla explains on its site.

“The value is the rolling mean R Factor over the past 30 days where the mean distance between the client and the server is less than 300 miles.”

The R-factor is an indication of the quality of VoIP calls on a network, and is calculated using various metrics including latency, jitter and packet loss – all important to online gaming as well.

The R-factor has a typical range of 50-100 where a higher score indicates a better VoIP call environment. An R-Factor of between 80 and 94 is considered desirable while values of between 70 and 80 are acceptable.

The average household quality index for the globe – hence the average R-factor – is 84.35 at the time of publication.

Living up to its reputation, South Korea tops the list with a score of 88.88. It is interesting to note that South Korea has an average upload speed of 29.15Mbps, and average download speed of 34.18Mbps.

Moving down the list, we find South Africa with a Quality Index rating of 79.00, an average download speed of 3.45Mbps, and average upload of 1.34Mbps. This places us between Israel at 80.00 and Germany at 78.80.

One wonders why a European powerhouse such as Germany is beaten in terms of broadband quality by South Africa, with our notoriously troubled telecoms environment. Further investigation reveals that Deutsche Telekom is dragging down Germany’s rating, with an average quality index of 65.80.
