Transformers: Fall of Cybertron – why you should care

1 August 2012

Transformers may have slipped out of the limelight when their 80’s cartoon came to an end, but thanks to Michael Bay’s big-screen adaptations and High Moon Studios resurrection in video game form, the future of Transformers is looking brighter than ever.

One of those bright sparks is Fall of Cybertron, the sequel to High Moon’s 2010 game. Leading up to some big releases this year, Fall of Cybertron is being passed by some, but here are five reasons why you should care about Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

High Moon Studios care, a lot.

High Moon Studios have shown their dedication to the Transformers franchise by taking on multiple projects, with 2010’s War for Cybertron (the prequel to Fall of Cybertron) impressing long-time fans and newcomers to Transformers games.

High Moon Studios are finding what fans want with Transformers games and are delivering a more true-to-form iteration with each release, while adding details such as new and tweaked designs for the Autobots and Decepticons.

There’s some Gears in these robots

A couple of the new gameplay features in the game include the ability to switch weapons/perspective at the press of a button. While not a true cover shooter like Gears of War, this shift allows players to better hide behind cover while aiming and firing.

Upgradable weapons

Weapons play an important role in Fall of Cybertron, and the ability to upgrade your firepower, rate of fire, and a number of other attributes gives Fall of Cybertron some depth to the long-range combat.

The design team emphasised that weapon upgrades would provide a significant change in the way it fires and the damage it causes, as opposed to a pure aesthetic change.

Dinosaurs!

One of the fan favourites and unsung heroes of the Transformers world is undoubtedly Grimlock. Being one of the Dinobots, Grimlock isn’t able to transform, but is a giant robotic T-Rex, so it doesn’t matter.

While Grimlock lacks long-range firepower, he makes up for it in brute strength, which builds up while he fights until he acquires the ability to unleash devastating attacks.

Transforming multiplayer

Multiplayer in Fall of Cybertron is not a tacked-on component, and is instead a core part of the game.

A number of game modes are on offer, including “Escalation”, which is a take on the now-common Horde mode structure, pitting a team of Transformers against increasingly difficult waves of enemies.

Most notably, the ability to build your own Transformers from an in-depth creation tool is now available, allowing players to take their unique designs into battle.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is scheduled for release on 24 August 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
