Resident Evil 6 divides critics: evolving or infected?

2 October 2012

Resident Evil 6 has been unleashed onto the world, but what do the critics think – is it a welcomed return or an festering sore?

It’s hard to tell, actually. The review scores have poured in, but they seem divided on both ends of the spectrum for Capcom’s latest offering.

Resident Evil 6 currently holds Metascores of 68 and 77 on Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively, while keeping 71.25% and 80.17% Gamerankings on the same console platforms.

But at the end of the day, its opinions that describe a game, so what are the critics saying?

Video Gamer – 6/10

“Resident Evil 6 is not one but four games, and Capcom has done a beautiful and stupid thing in its attempt to recreate a rich, diverse and storied series into one single title.” Read the full review.

Playstation Official Magazine – 90/100

“There’s more content and variety here than in any other entry in the series, and its stories – while a little too goofy to really take seriously – are nonetheless fascinating, particularly for those of us who’ve watched these characters grow and develop over the years… RE6 is a strange experience, to be sure – but more importantly, it’s an unforgettable one.” Read the full review.

G4TV – 2.5/5

“As a whole package, Resident Evil 6 is fundamentally flawed. It has a poor camera, wonky melee combat, bad narrative pacing and follow through, unfinished and half-baked modes, and a weird back-and-forth between cutscenes, QTEs, and actual gameplay that leaves me feeling like I’m just along for the ride on a bad theme park attraction.” Read the full review.

Polygon – 4/10

“Resident Evil 6 leaves players with the shell of a blockbuster game. It blusters along with massive explosions and insane plot twists, but it lacks a fundamental understanding of why action games are fun. In the end, Resident Evil 6 resembles one of its grotesque mutations — bloated, out of control, and recklessly trying to consume everything around it. Capcom has built a real monster here.Read the full review.

IGN – 7.9/10

“Resident Evil 6 might be the biggest RE game ever, but it struggles to be the best, lacking a coherent vision.” Read the full review.

Destructoid – 3/10

“It’s bad enough that the game — at its very best — is so pedestrian, but to screw up in areas that even third-rate shooters manage to get right is something Capcom should find degrading.” Read the full review.

Gamesradar – 3.5/5 Stars

“Even the changes to the gameplay are strong, and you’ll likely spend a majority of the game enjoying the weird, unexpected ride that it takes you on.” Read the full review.

Joystiq – 3.5/5 Stars

“If every idea had come together without friction, and with the aid of Capcom’s top-notch presentation, Resident Evil 6 would have been a tremendous action game.” Read the full review.

1up – C+

“Capcom’s latest iteration on survival horror shows off the fundamental problem with inclusion.” Read the full review.

GameSpot – 4.5/10

“Resident Evil 6 pushes Kevin VanOrd’s buttons.” Read the full review.

Amen. Watched a few video reviews and the quick time events don’t look like fun…but I guess on the plus side (NOT) it’s sprinkled with plenty of cut-scenes and killer “WTF” I’m dead all of a sudden moments.

Was keen…will wait for a sale/cheap secondhand copy instead (and I had such high hopes).
