While some games take us to brown and grey corridors of factories, warehouses and run-down buildings, others take us to tropical paradises, lush jungles and sparkling beaches; so we’ve decided to salute the best games set on beautiful islands:
Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is an obvious mention – it’s the newest and most gorgeous island around in today’s gaming world.
Running on the Dunia 2 engine, Far Cry 3’s sun-kissed setting has everything you’d expect from a gorgeous island holiday, plus blood-thirsty pirates and life-threatening wildlife.
The Rook islands look like a place we’d definitely spend some time on.
Just Cause 2
The original Just Cause had a gorgeous setting, but Just Cause 2 took it to a new level with the island of Panau.
Besides being ruled by an evil dictator, the island is a beautiful sight to behold. Amazing beaches, thick jungles, busy cities, and snow-capped mountains make up the scenery of Panau, which makes exploding cars and mass murdering that much prettier.
Dead Island
Dead Island looked like a dream holiday destination before, you know, being overrun by the undead.
The island of Banoi has the 5-star hotels, sprawling pools, pristine beaches and everything else we’d want to get our minds off the brains splattered on our floral shirts.
LOST: Via Domus
The TV-show to game-adaptation LOST: Via Domus features a stunning island, even with exploding plane parts and spooky smoke monsters ruining the fun.
While the game itself wasn’t that much fun, the island was interesting to explore, and with the strange pirate ships and underground facilities, it offers an air of mystery that other locations don’t.
Donkey Kong Country Returns
When Donkey Kong’s bananas are stolen, he has to endure the hardship of trying to get them back – but at least he’s got some sunny settings to visit.
The island is stellar to look at, and whether you jump from the thick trees to the underground caverns, you can’t help but to keep your eyes on the background, instead of Donkey and Diddy Kong themselves.
Notable mentions: The Secret of Monkey Island, Crysis, Mercenaries 2, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
