Best TVs of CES 2013

CES 2013 has wrapped up, and some of the best TVs of the show include the Panasonic 56-inch OLED TV, the Sony Bravia 4K TVs, Samsung’s Floating 4K Ultra HD TV, and the Samsung 55-inch Super OLED TV .

Ultra HD TV is a new category of display that caused a big stir at CES 2013. Ultra HD actually defines two categories: 4K UHDTV (2160p) has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 (8.3 megapixels), 4 times the pixels of 1080p; 8K UHDTV (4320p) has a resolution of 7680 × 4320 (33.2 megapixels), 16 times the pixels of current 1080p HDTV.

While the technology has been kicking around for many years, we are finally seeing viable consumer-grade 4K products on display. There are no price points on these resolution behemoths, but Samsung aims to bring 4K televisions to the US market as soon as Q1 2013.

Samsung’s UN85S9 Floating 4K Ultra HD TV

A unanimous decision by the majority of esteemed tech publications went to Samsung’s 110-inch UN85S9 Floating 4K Ultra HD TV.

Instead of edge-lighting, the TV features a full-array LED back-light and local dimming, which improves picture quality beyond what Samsung has released before.

The design of the UN85S9 is also unique, as it sits on an industrial-like frame, which allows the TV to be moved and angled in a number of different and convenient ways.

Samsung KN55ES9000 55-inch Super OLED TV

Samsung’s other winner at CES 2013 includes the KN55ES9000 Super OLED TV.

The TV requires no colour filter thanks to the OLED pixel unit comprising of self-emitting RGB sub-pixels laid directly on the display panel, each emitting its own light.

The technology is also able to differentiate varying degrees of blacks and shadows, which allows even dark scenes to have strong detail.

The TV also features Samsung’s Smart interaction technology, which lets users control volume, power and activate apps through voice commands.

Panasonic 56-inch OLED Ultra-HD TV

Panasonic’s new 56-inch OLED TV will only be available towards 2015, but the recently-unveiled TV has the tech industry excited.

The TV offers rich colours and deep blacks, thanks to the OLED, and also some great power saving features.

The display measures just 0.5 inches in thickness and, interestingly enough, was manufactured using 3D-printing technology.

The TVs (KD-55X9000A, and the slightly bigger KD-65X9000A) feature Sony’s X-Reality PRO picture engine, which helps reduce visual noise and auto-corrects image shapes.
