Healthy snack food for gamers

15 February 2014

We all have those crazy long gaming sessions lasting hours, but how can we be healthier whilst we are playing games? Here are some of the better foods to snack on whilst gaming.

Popcorn

Popcorn has zero fat in it unless you add butter to it. It’s quick to prepare and easy to eat with one hand, so you can jam away at that left click or carry on walking forward on the analogue while quickly grabbing a bunch and stuffing it into your month.

Green Tea

Green Tea contains good old caffeine, and l’theanine which has been shown to increase “alpha-wave activity”, which increases tranquility, and releases caffeine slowly instead of all at once.

The two of these ingredients combined result in a potion of improved speed, accuracy, alertness, and concentration, while also having a calming effect.

This means the end to YouTube gaming rants and aspersions cast against other player’s mothers, as well as a world without any smashed keyboards or controllers.

Green Tea

Dark Chocolate

I had to make sure that there was some sort of sweet on this list. Dark Chocolate contains magnesium which helps you de-stress; perfect for those challenging puzzles and dungeon hunts.

It also releases endorphins and serotonin, which makes you feel good and happy. Please go easy on the chocolate though; paced consumption is recommended – this is supposed to be a healthy list!

Dark Chocolate

Nuts

Want to play games for endless hours and de-tox at the same time? Well nuts are for you!

Nuts are high in Vitamin E which is an antioxidant, and also slow down ageing, so you will be able to play forever and no one will ever judge you for being too old for games.

Now I am not talking about chocolate covered nuts, or chocolate with grated nuts –  let’s not forget the reason for this list. The best bet are raw nuts that haven’t been roasted.

That's a lot of nuts!

Water

This is a no-brainer; water is good for you and you should be drinking it all the time. Good hydration has been proven to increase mental focus, but every part of your body needs water, so drink it!

Be warned though – too much water will result in very regular bathroom breaks, and we all know that there is no pause button during multiplayer matches or Dark Souls. Research has shown that concentration spans decrease when nature calls.

Other good foods

Chewing Gum

Although some might argue with this, studies show that chewing gum during stressful situations helps relieve that stress – so chew away, but sugar free only okay?

Grain Food

You have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Keeping a box of cereal like Otees next to you while gaming and eating them like chips is a great idea; grain helps us with mental focus.

Veggies

Not the ideal food for a gaming session but vegetables help with all sorts body and mind enhancements alike. So maybe keep a bowl of boiled peas next to you and eat those like Astros – just a random idea here.
