Flappy Bird: best tap happy clones

18 February 2014

With the death of Flappy Bird comes the birth of hundreds of clones.

Developing apps and games for IOS and Android is so quick these day, mere hours after the success of Flappy Bird knock-offs began appearing online.

I have played dozens of them and here are the best of the bunch, the crème de la flappy crème.

Flappy Bird MMO

  • Platform: Web Browser

Yes, you read it right – Flappy Bird is now an MMO. You play the game in a web browser, using your mouse click makes Flappy flap; dodging pipes and avoiding death is your main goal.

During the game you see other player’s ghost data flapping next to you; this shows you how they have flapped compared to you. This is a free game and can even be played on your tablet or smartphone.

Clumsy Bird

  • Platform: Android

What do you get when you combine Flappy Bird and Angry Birds? The definition of cheap clone. The description even screams Angry Birds: “Your eggs have been stolen and it’s your mission to get them back”.

Flappy Tappy

  • Platform: Android

If Flappy Bird proved too difficult for you, then Flappy Tappy will be your stress saviour. This game has less challenging physics as your bird doesn’t fall so quickly, and you get points for every second you live, so you won’t feel so bad when you score die right in the beginning because you will have at least 3 seconds on the clock.

Fly Birdie

  • Platform: IOS

One of the most hideous knock-offs around – it is just terrible to look at, but it’s a Flappy Bird nonetheless. You tap the screen and the bird flies through wooden looking pipe things – seriously I don’t know what those are – touch them and you die, enough said.

Fly Birdie has two difficulty levels – Easy and Hard – and the developers have promised that there is so much more coming. What else can you add to a game like Flappy Bird? I have no idea…

PIOU PIOU

  • Platform: Android

Piou Piou was the original Flappy Bird clone, according to the rumours, and it’s not a bad game at all. It looks okay and is just as difficult.

You control a yellow bird passing through Cacti and your goal is to fly as far as possible – pretty simple.

Or you can just get someone to dump the APK of the original one for you and sideload it onto your Android device.
