SA retailers reveal best selling games of 2014 (so far)

4 April 2014

Drum roll please, we are here to announce the top selling games of 2014 in South Africa (so far).

It has been an interesting year for gaming with the PlayStation 4 finding its legs in the local market and epic new games being launched for the next-gen console. The PC and current-gen market are far from being eclipsed by the new kid on the block though, and feature strongly in the sales wrap.

We spoke to local retailers and asked them what had been selling well this year so far.

Gfk tracks retail across SA and they have been doing so reliably for years. I’ve sat through their presentations where they can drill down data in very interesting ways. There’s often a purchasing pattern like this around franchises, with the older titles being picked up as the new one is marketed well or gets good consumer mindshare. Don’t forget they track all sorts of retail outlets, including mass retailers like Makro, niche retailers like BT Games, and online as well. Really, I don’t find it hard to believe that GTA 4 and Sims, among the biggest selling titles globally, are also popular in SA.
