Video games are great. Few things beat taking control of a character and doing with him or her as you please – fighting off orcs, slaying dragons, shooting Nazis – it’s the best.
One thing that makes it all the more memorable, though, is the appearance of your favourite movie character in a game, and them fitting in like they belong.
To celebrate, I have compiled a list of the most notable movie/gaming crossovers in recent times.
Freddy Kruger – Mortal Kombat
Want to slice up a few enemies up with your stylish nail blades? You can in Mortal Kombat. The 2011 smash-hit fighter had some awesome features, but the best was Freddy Kruger as a playable character. He also came with his own set of Fatalities, like taking his opponent underground into a fiery pit of despair.
Michael Myers – Call of Duty: Ghosts
My childhood nightmare came true with this DLC pack for COD: Ghost – Michael Myers as a perk. Myers replaced the Juggernaut Maniac perk, with the player getting super sprinting speed and extra armour. When you kill an enemy, mist pours out of the corpse, plus there’s a classic soundtrack that plays when the player has the perk.
What forced the developers to include this? Only they know – but it is quite an awesome cameo.
Predator – Call of Duty: Ghosts
Another Call of Duty DLC on the list, and it feels like they are trying to set a trend here. That, or they have run out of ideas.
The latest DLC for Ghosts included the Predator, and sees the stealthy alien fighter going up against guns, grenades, and whatever else the Marines can throw at him. Predator is similar to Michael Myers – he runs fast and has a lot of armour – but he can also become invisible and use thermal vision.
Yoda and Darth Vader – Soul Calibur IV
The bonus characters in Soul Calibur IV included Star Wars legends, Master Yoda and Darth Vader. Apparently the developers were inspired by the design of the consoles the game was made for; Yoda is green like bits of the Xbox 360, while Darth Vader is shiny and black, like PS3.
The characters were exclusive to their respective consoles at release, but became available across platforms after a while. I loved Darth Vader, one of the best cameos out there.
Katt Williams and Ricky Gervais – GTA IV
Stumbling into a comedy club in Liberty City at night will result in a stand-up show either by Katt Williams or Ricky Gervais. This cameo was pretty neat, given that it was a few minutes of chill time during your crazy ventures in the big city, smashing old ladies with baseball bats.
Feel down and need a pick-me-up? Don’t go to the street corner and pick up a hooker, grab a seat in the club and flex those cheek muscles.
What are some of your most memorable cameos? Let us know in the comments and forum.
