Wolfenstein: The New Order preview

18 May 2014

Wolfenstein: The New Order is set three years after the events of the original Wolfenstein, and looks like it will bring together everything we love about the franchise: guns, killing Nazis, guns, explosions, guns, and huge robots.

The game is set in an alternative history where the Nazis won World War 2 and now exert their evil influence over the world. You play as William “B.J” Blazkowicz, who is tasked with taking down the nefarious superpower.

Here are the facts we know so far about The New Order:

  • The PS4,PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 versions all run at 60fps.
  • The PS4 and Xbox One versions both run at 1080p.
  • The Xbox 360 version will contain four installation discs for the game, other platforms will have one disc.
  • The PS4 supports a second screen experience where you can access the map to see where enemy commanders are lurking as well as where the secrets are hidden.
  • The game features in-game choices that creats alternative timelines in the story, meaning that you should play the game more than one to experience all it has to offer.
  • A single playthrough will take around 15-20 hours to complete
  • You can dual-wield weapons.
  • The cover system has been revamped, now including a lean mechanic.
  • Each level contains secrets and hidden passageways. Exploring each level and collecting hidden items will unlock character art, sketches, and concept art.
  • You do not recover health like in a normal FPS. In Wolfenstein: The New Order you have a bar and it will only recover if it is half way full or more. You need to collect health packs to replenish empty health bars. This feature is similar to Resistance 3.
  • The Doom beta is included when you purchase the game and will be revealed at a later date.

The game will also feature a skill tree mechanic, which allows you to unlock new skills by gaining certain achievements. One of the skills you can unlock is the ability to silently throw a knife at a Nazi. How wunderbar. Depending on your play style, you will unlock various parts of your skill tree. If stealth is your forte, then your stealth skills will advance. If you prefer blowing people up and dual-wielding machine guns, your blood and gore skills will advance.

And here is one more video, just in case you were not convinced.

Think I’ll wait for the reviews first as I’m not prepared to use 40 -50GB downloading it from steam, will make more sense buying it at the retailers.
