Sad mobile ports of great video games

BioShock

Whoever said that tablets are the future of gaming was probably drunk.

I say this because I have yet to play one game on my iPad which impresses me – and to make matters worse, we have console and PC game developers making tablet games – which is a waste of their time and talent.

Even worse is when a great PC or console game is taken and ported to mobile, often resulting in a sad memory of a title.

Here are some examples of great games which became sad mobile ports.

Bioshock

Bioshock was released on iOS, and it is terrible. Firstly, the game only runs on iPad Air and iPhone 5S, which drastically reduces the user base. Secondly, the game looks terrible – low-res textures, ridiculous touch screen controls, and low poly models all result in a failed port.

I don’t know about you, but to me this smells like an excuse to make a quick buck.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy

Here we have a great Nintendo 3DS game which was poorly ported to iOS and then made free-to-play – sort of. If you want to play past the tutorial level you have to make a purchase, and if this was not bad enough the add-on content costs a fortune.

Stick to the 3DS version, this mobile port is all about the profit.

Mass Effect Infiltrator

Any app that costs $4.99 and says in-app purchases underneath it should be avoided. Unfortunately, Mass Effect Infiltrator is one of these.

If you are expecting the great Mass Effect trilogy on your cellphone, prepare to be disappointed. You will play through nine levels of shooting and if you want to customise anything, get out the credit card.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

I am all for revisiting childhood memories by playing a great PS2 classic, but there is a platform for that, and it is not the iPhone

GTA: San Andreas was released on iOS and as much as it is the full game, it is difficult to get past the stick controls and dated visuals. Stay away.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed lasts two hours, is mostly made up of ridiculous cut scenes which you cannot skip, and has horrendous visuals.

I would rather play Snake on a Nokia 3310.
