Did you buy the right game this month?

26 November 2014

November 2014 was a good month for gamers, with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Grand Theft Auto 5 (next-gen), Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4, and Assassin’s Creed Unity among the new titles released.

Now that most of you have bought one (or all) of the aforementioned games, the question is: did you make the right choice?

Unfortunately gamers are prone to purchaser’s bias, and your own opinion cannot be trusted. To accurately answer this question we must rely on the facts and figures.

So, let’s see if you made the right choice based on review aggregator Metacritic.

PC
Dragon Age: Inquisition 87
Far Cry 4 78
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 77
Assassin’s Creed Unity 71
GTA 5 Coming 2015
PS4
GTA 5 97
Dragon Age: Inquisition 89
Far Cry 4 85
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 83
Assassin’s Creed Unity 75
Xbox One
GTA 5 96
Dragon Age: Inquisition 86
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 82
Far Cry 4* 78
Assassin’s Creed Unity 72
*Based on three or fewer “critic reviews”

Based on the critic reviews, you made a good choice if you picked up a copy of GTA 5 or Dragon Age: Inquisition. Assassin’s Creed fans who picked up Unity, it would appear you guys made the wrong choice.

That being said, all reviews are subjective and the gamer playing Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on his or her Xbox One might be having more fun than all of us.

Why did Assassin’s Creed Unity score so low?

One of the reasons Assassin’s Creed Unity did so poorly among reviewers was the fact that it contained quite a few bugs on release.

Among the problems experienced by gamers, and acknowledged by Ubisoft, were:

  • Arno falling through the ground
  • Game crashing when joining a co-op session
  • Arno getting caught inside of hay carts
  • Delay in reaching the main menu screen at game start
  • Frame rate issues
  • Graphical and collision issues
  • Matchmaking co-op issues
  • Helix Credits issues

A Forbes article, written by one of the publication’s gaming contributors, even suggested that Unity should be recalled due to its many problems. (Obviously this won’t happen.)
