Last month, we covered the differences between the monthly offerings from PlayStation Plus, Games with Gold and the Humble Monthly Bundle.
It’s one month later, and we thought we’d once again compare the value offered by each of the major platforms subscription services.
Let’s take a look at all of them and see who has the most value for your rand in March.
*All review scores are based off the Metacritic average*
Humble Monthly Bundle
Total Value: R1561.00 | Average Score: 82.67%
The Humble Monthly Bundle sets you back $12 each month, and is available on the 5th of every month.
This month, the service is led by ARK: Survival Evolved, the game that pits you against a Jurassic world as you try and survive the perils that await you in the dense jungles and deep caves.
The game has been in Early Access for some time, so picking this up would be ideal as you could watch the game grow as you experience one of the biggest and richest titles in gaming. It’s pretty great.
| Game | Reviews | Retail Price |
| ARK: Survival Evolved | 72% | R319.00 |
| Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut | 84% | R409.00 |
| GRAV | 68% | R219.00 |
| Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse | 98% | R219.00 |
| I am Bread | 80% | R139.00 |
| Sentinels of the Multiverse – The Video Game | 94% | R159.00 |
| Switchcars | N/A | R97.00 |
PlayStation Plus
Total Value: R1017 | Average Score: 75.00%
PlayStation Plus for March is led by the over-the-top platform action game Broforce, the game we all voted for in last month’s Vote to Play competition.
Other than that, the PlayStation Plus lineup for March is a bit lacklustre with nothing to write home about.
Here’s how this month’s PlayStation Plus lineup works out?
| Game | Reviews | Retail Price |
| Broforce | 83% | R218.00 |
| Galak-Z | 82% | R299.00 |
| Flame Over | 69% | R159.00 |
| Super Stardust HD | 85% | R119.00 |
| The Last Guy | 77% | R73.00 |
| Reality Fighters | 54% | R149.00 |
Games with Gold
Total Value – R1241.00 | Average Score: 75.75%
Games with Gold this month is led by Lords of the Fallen, which is probably the most expensive offering in some time from the service.
Supreme Commander 2 and Borderlands are both backwards compatible, so Xbox One owners will be happy to know they can play them on their console too.
If you ask me, Microsoft are really stepping up their game with their subscription based service.
| Game | Reviews | Retail Price |
| Lords of the Fallen | 71% | R674.00 |
| Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishment | 73% | R249.00 |
| Supreme Commander 2 | 75% | R149.00 |
| Borderlands | 84% | R169.00 |
Overall
| Service | Subscription cost |
Total Value | Value per Rand |
| PlayStation Plus | R99 | R1017.00 | R10.27 |
| Xbox Gold | R49 | R1241.00 | R25.32 |
| Humble Bundle Monthly | Approximately R185 at the time of writting | R1361.00 | R8.21 |
If all that mattered was the cost of the games you get for the price you pay, Games with Gold is leagues ahead.
Of course, it’s all subjective and up to you to decide. Our vote is for Humble Monthly Bundle, on the bases at ARK is a much better game than Lords of the Fallen – as is Wasteland 2. There’s also a lot more variety to be had from Humble Bundle.
That said, Games with Gold is going from strength to strength and offering yet another solid month.
As for PlayStation Plus… we really don’t mind the inclusion of indie games, but while both Broforce and Galak-z are pretty good the rest are a little “meh”.
