11 most disappointing games of 2010

9 January 2011

For every ceiling, there must be a floor. For every high, there must be a low, and seemingly, for every great game that came out in 2010, there was one which sorely disappointed. Here is MyGaming’s eleven most disappointing games of 2010.

Naughty Bear

Naughty Bear promised us something unique and quirky. The premise: you play a psychotic giant teddy bear that lives on Perfection Island. After being teased by other teddy bears, Naughty Bear embarks on a vicious killing spree.

From there, the narrative grows progressively more bizarre. Unfortunately, the game fell completely flat, and ended up being panned by reviewers everywhere. The Escapist gave it 2/5 and called it “repetitious and clunky.”

Alpha Protocol

Conceptually quite promising, Alpha Protocol was ruined by bugs, clumsy gameplay mechanics, and shoddy production values.

Dark Void

Jet packs, WWII, aliens and the Bermuda triangle. Seriously, how could this game possibly suck, right? Well it did. Hard. Read our Dark Void review.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

The first game had promise, but was let down by repetitive gameplay, and unimpressive production values. LucasArts promised that the sequel would right those wrongs, and it did to an extent.

However, The Force Unleashed II ended up being nothing special, seemingly lacking personality and inspiration.

This action based MMO ended up not being released in SA due to server issues, but it was just as well because it was widely panned by critics. Then the whole production went belly-up, leaving many paying customers in the lurch.

Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight

In an unusual move, EA decided to get creative with the basic gameplay elements that have become stock with the C&C franchise in its final iteration. Furthermore, it was panned for its obtrusive DRM, which resulted in players losing campaign progress if their connection dropped.

Crackdown 2

The original Crackdown is one of the most critically acclaimed Xbox 360 exclusives available. Naturally then, gamers were excited about the prospect of a sequel. Unfortunately, Crackdown 2 didn’t introduce anything new to the series, nor did it manage to recapture the magic of the first game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is probably the most successful online FPS ever released, if we combine its critical acclaim with its impressive sales stats. Since then, Activision has given us Modern Warfare 2, which was mildly disappointing, but not a total disaster.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Black Ops was expected to fix the biggest problem with its predecessor; the PC version’s lack of dedicated servers. Unfortunately, it was released broken, and millions of gamers have complained about lag, frame rate issuess, and general buginess. After numerous patches, the game is still not running as smoothly as it should be, and many have abandoned it all together.

Aliens vs. Predator

Anyone who played the original AVP games was desperately anticipating the 2010 reboot. Sadly, some dodgy controls wrapped up in half-baked ideas made for a rather uninspired experience.

Star Trek: Online

What’s that? Another MMO which failed to capture significant market share? You would think that simply combining the Star Trek canon with basic MMO gameplay would be a winning formula. Sadly, the game failed to do anything really noteworthy, and its subscriber base has been steadily declining since its launch.

Final Fantasy XIV

The PC release of FF XIV (an MMO) was so crappy that it caused publisher Square Enix to postpone the PS3 release, as well as the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Lesson learnt I suppose. Let’s hope the PS3 version is fixed when it is finally released.
