The University of Calgary has paid 20,000 Canadian dollars (R231,636) worth of bitcoins to hackers after it was unable to restore the damage they caused.
Thousands of vital emails and files were maliciously encrypted, locking faculty and students out of vital materials.
“The university is now in the process of assessing and evaluating the decryption keys,” said the university’s vice president Linda Dalgetty.
“The actual process of decryption is time-consuming and must be performed with care.
“It is important to note that decryption keys do not automatically restore all systems or guarantee the recovery of all data.”
There is growing concern over the frequency of ransomware attacks, especially in instances where the victims have no choice but to pay out.
