Mother faces jail-time for not posting to Facebook after son’s death

A judge’s highly unusual order enforcing a grieving mother to post about her son’s death on Facebook has added an extra layer of controversy to a contentious child death case in Canada, reports news.com.au.

Collet Stephan and her husband David were sentenced to 3 months of house arrest after failing to provide the necessaries of life for their 19-month old son who died from bacterial meningitis.

As part of the somewhat lenient sentence, Justice Rodney Jerke also ordered Collet Stephan to post unedited copies of the decision to social media accounts.

While the order may appear unusual to outsiders, it follows massive controversy surrounding Stephan’s Prayers for Ezekiel Facebook page.

Stephan has since failed to post the judgement since its handing down on 24 June.

The judge’s sentencing decision includes a timeline of events that describes how the Stephans continued to treat Ezekiel with remedies like garlic and horseradish after a nurse — and even a receptionist at a naturopathic clinic — urged them to take the ailing boy to a doctor.
