Razer has announced the new Tartarus gaming keypad which is designed specifically for left-handed use and includes a number of customisations and neat shortcuts.
Razer South Africa says the Tartarus is currently available from participating South African retailers, and the recommended retail price is R899.
This compares rather favourably to the price on the Razerzone web store, currently at US $79.99 (approx R831).
The Tartarus is an almost identical clone of the Razer Nostromo, Razer’s first attempt at separate keypads designed for gamers. Tartarus features 25 fully backlit and programmable keys, a slim profile for better comfort, an eight-way directional thumbpad and a mode switcher key.
The Tartarus is also capable of storing up to 128 macro commands and eight keyset layouts, which are selectable by pressing the mode switch and flicking between them using the thumb pad. Macros can be recorded and have no set length, while the Razer Synapse 2.0 drivers provide for unlimited game profiles to be set on your computer, although only eight will be accessible at any given time.
Note that while it is possible to program a macro to be launched when pressing the thumbpad in any direction in addition to a modifier key, the thumbpad does not count towards the actual key set. Razer counts this as fifteen keys on the top of the Tartarus as well as a single thumb key to the right-hand side.
Razer Tartarus product features include:
- 25 fully programmable keys including an
- 8-way directional thumb-pad
- Instantaneous switching between 8 key maps

- Full anti-ghosting

I’m actually seriously keen to get my hands on a game pad and I haven’t even had any experience with one yet; it’s just that I can really see the value in this. For R899, that’s a number I’d be prepared to spend on this. Nice work Razer.
