Intel unveils system requirements for Optane storage

Intel has listed the system requirements of its upcoming Optane storage.

The biggest limitation of the technology is that it can only be used with processors based on Intel’s 7th-gen Kaby Lake architecture or newer.

This means that 6th-gen Skylake processor owners will have to upgrade their CPU to use Optane storage.

Optane drives will also require the following hardware:

• Intel 200-series chipset
• M.2 type 2280-S1-B-M or 2242-S1-B-M
• M.2 connector must be linked to Remapped PCIe Controller in x2 or x4 configuration
• M.2 B-M keys meeting NVMe 1.1 standards
• BIOS supporting Intel Rapid Storage Technology 15.5

Intel’s Optane drives and memory are based on 3D XPoint technology, which promises fast, non-volatile storage. Its potential applications include long-term storage and memory modules.
