Expensive graphics cards are still popular in South Africa

Despite the high price of top-end PC hardware in South Africa, local gamers are still buying high-performance components.

Following the recent reveal of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, many South African retailers have listed the product for pre-order.

The high-end GPU starts at around R12,500 in South Africa.

Wootware lead developer Matthew Berry said there has been a lot of interest in the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card in South Africa, especially among gamers and hardware enthusiasts.

Previously, the only option for gamers seeking a single GPU for 4K gaming was Nvidia’s Titan X Pascal – which was only officially available through the company’s online store.

“The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is an effective replacement for the GTX Titan Pascal and will become a new favourite for those using Nvidia GPUs for 4K gaming, as well as deep-learning and compute applications,” said Berry.

Popular graphics cards

Berry said mid-to-high-range graphics cards are the most popular among South African consumers, despite the higher price of the hardware.

“Both budget and high-end markets are robust in South Africa,” said Berry.

“Mid-range and higher GPUs tend to be more popular than budget hardware, since there are more integrated GPUs and second-hand options to consider in the lower price segment,” he said.

“As people spend more time gaming, it starts to make sense to consider the higher-end of the hardware spectrum.”

The interest in high-end gaming hardware is evident in Wootware’s store, with the most popular Nvidia graphics card the GeForce GTX 1060.

The GeForce GTX 1060 is a powerful GPU, capable of running most new games in Full HD with a high frame rate, and currently sells for between R4,000-R5,500 locally.

It should be noted that Wootware stocks Zotac and Galax GeForce GTX 1060 graphics cards, which are significantly cheaper than other AIB partner cards.

It’s ridiculous to hear “something expensive is popular”. Popular can be only CHEAP hardware! Who wants to waste more money?? Correct wording is “People still forced to buy expensive cards due to artificial slow-down in games”.
I remember times when I played DOOM w/o accelerator at all. I remember when Half-Life required simplistic GPU to show a whole world. Now 1000x better GPU cannot show simple environment w/o lags. Heh…
