According to Fudzilla, AMD is currently showing select members of the press its upcoming Bulldozer CPU range behind closed doors.
Bulldozer will be competing in the high-performance space, and will go directly up against Intel’s Core i7 and Core i5 processors, although early reports suggest that it will not be able to beat Intel’s second generation Core i7s, Sandy Bridge, in terms of sheer performance.
However, AMD’s recent approach to the CPU and graphics card market has been to try beat its competition in terms of value for money, and Bulldozer will supposedly be significantly cheaper than Sandy Bridge while offering decent performance.
Additional leaks confirm that Bulldozer will be out on 19 September, and that it will be based on a 32nm frabrication process. The new CPU’s will use AMD’s new AM3+ socket, and come in 6 and 8 core varieties, with clock speeds reported from 2.GHz to 3.9Ghz, or 3.7GHz to 4.5GHz in turbo mode. Each core will have 1MB of L2 Cache, and 8MB of Shared Cache, the CPUs will consume between 95W and 125W of power, depending on specific clock speeds and specifications.
The Bulldozer CPU’s will also ship in the Black Edition variations, so we can expect unlocked multipliers – a feature which overclockers will be interested in.
Intel is expected to follow up with its third-generation of Core i7, Ivy Bridge, which will take advantage of a 22nm fabrication process. Ivy Bridge will be backwards compatible with the Sandy Bridge platform, and is expected out around March 2012.
