Intel: 16 new Sandybridge CPUs; prices cut

6 September 2011

Over the weekend Intel announced 11 brand spanking new desktop Sandybridge CPUs along with five new mobile CPUs.

If you’re a performance enthusiast, then there is not too much to get excited about with the new line up, as it mostly consists of Celeron, Pentium and i3 processors, although there is a quad-core i5 in the form of the i5-242- which is clocked at 3.3GHz, ships with 6MB L3 cache and will retail for $177 (R1,240), making it a potential budget-performance option.

There is also a new monster mobile i7 chip in the form of the i7-2960XM which has 4 cores with Hyperthreading (8 processing threads) and is clocked at 2.7GHz or 3.7GHz in Turbo mode. It has 8MB of L3 cash and carries a nauseating $1,096 (R7,670) price tag.

An additional two mobile quad-core i7s have also been added in the form of the i7-2860QM and i7-2760QM, both of which feature Hyperthreading (8 threads). Another dual-core i7 is also introduced by way of the i7-2640M with Hyperthreading (4 threads) and 4MB of L3 cache.

On top of the new CPUs, Intel has announced minor price cuts on various desktop Sandybridge CPUs. The price cuts aren’t much to get excited about, and range from 2 to 6 percent.

i5-2390T 2 2.7/3.5GHz $195 $184
i5-2400S 4 2.5/3.3GHz $195 $184
