Valve has published the latest results from its Steam hardware survey, giving a great overview of the kinds of PC gaming systems that are out in the gaming wilds. Key results indicate that Windows 7 64-bit, an Intel CPU, Nvidia DX11 1GB GPU, and 4GB of RAM is the most common setup among Steam gamers.
How does your system compare? An overview of the results can be found below. You can check out the detailed break-down over on Valve’s hardware survey website.
Steam Users Operating Systems
Windows 7 64-bit is by far the most popular operating system among Steam users, with 56.35% share. Windows 8 is on the rise, with all versions combined used among 6.93% of Steam gamers. Much maligned Windows Vista is hanging in there with 7.04% share.
The total Apple MacOS users is at 3.72%. Ubuntu is slowly clawing out a user-base with 0.80% of users running the Linux-based OS.
Steam Users CPUs
Intel at 73.22% share dominates AMD (26.78%) in the processor space.
The vast majority of users are running 2-core (49.11%) and 4-core (41.16%) CPUs, with 4.58% using systems with more than 4-cores. 5.16% of gamers are still hanging in there with a single-core CPU.
Steam Users System RAM and Hard Drive Space
4GB of system RAM is the most common configuration (22.78%), with 8GB coming close at 21.25%.
3GB and 2GB are the next most common configurations at 20% and 13.95% respectively.
The most common amount of total hard drive space in systems surveyed is 250GB to 499GB (34.86%). Most gamers appear to be able to keep 100Gb to 249GB of disk space free (25.90%), probably to store the latest Linux distros as they become available.
Steam Users GPUs
DX10 and DX11 systems dominate (a combinations of Vista or Windows 7 and a DX10 or DX11 GPU) with 30.83% and 49.75% respectively. More specifically, DX11 capable cards are used by 55.11% of gamers, and DX10 cards by 38.74%.
Nvidia users make up 52.13% and AMD/ATI users make up 34.2%. Unfortunately, 13.23% of Steam users are stuck on a crummy Intel graphics chip.
GPUs with 1GB of VRAM are most common, present in 41.96% of systems (combination of 1024MB and 1023MB graphics cards).
Steam Users Display Setup
Unsurprisingly, the most common display resolution is 1920 x 1080 (28.30%). Some poor gamers (4.12%) are still running 4:3 ratio monitors at a resolution of 1024 x 768. We weep for you, as we are sure your eyes weep.
Interestingly, multi-monitor setups are becoming quite popular, with 18.79% of those running two 16:9, 1920 x 1080 monitors (3840 x 1080 resolution).
Steam Users Language
The most commonly spoken language among Steam users is English (53.62%). Russian is the next most common language (15.20%) – DOTA 2 players, please try to stifle your groans.
