Alienware Alpha: a gaming console made for PC gamers

25 November 2014

Dell has unveiled the pricing and specifications of its Alienware Alpha range of mini-PC/gaming consoles.

The Alpha is aimed at gamers who want the “ease of a console, with the freedom of a complete PC”, and is – basically – a tiny gaming PC with an Xbox 360 controller.

The console, which comes in four variants, is currently available through Dell’s online US store and other US retailers with prices ranging from $549 to $899.

Dell is punting the fact that the Alpha is a fraction of the size of the current next-gen consoles (PS4, Xbox One) and has the ability to play a ton of Steam controller-supported games.

The specifications of the PC/console hybrid, along with a few pictures, are posted below.

Besides the Xbox 360 controller, the Alpha comes with 4 USB ports; an Ethernet port; HDMI out and in; an optical audio out; and the relevant power cord.

“We’ve been working hard this past year to break the mold and develop a system that finally brings hundreds of Steam games, including some really fun indie titles, to TVs,” said Alienware.

The gaming brand did not throw around the word “4K” – which some PC gamers always want to hear – and simply promised 1080p gaming from the Alpha. Performance benchmarks are listed below.

Another number which will put a smug smile on the face of the Master Race is how many games are supported by this new entrant into the console market.

While the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 supported 59 and 111 games respectively as of August 2014, the Alpha supports over 3,200 PC games.

Another little jab in the side of Sony and Microsoft is that if you open your PS4 or Xbox One, the warranty is voided. This is not the case in terms of the Alpha.

Its overkill for a “SteamOS console” unit if you are only going to in home stream your games from your host pc. If not and this is going to be main gaming unit with regards to SteamOS installed games then it’s very nice indeed.
As it stands id rather build my own steamos pc (which is what i did) for way cheaper.
