The latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 5, is due to be announced on 16 June according to a blogpost by Bluetooth SIG Executive Director Mark Powell.
This new version is said to quadruple the speeds currently be offered by Bluetooth 4.2 while doubling the range offered by devices.
The new version will also feature “significantly more capacity to advertising transmissions”, which translates to devices being easier to recognise and distinguish.
With all of these new additions, Bluetooth 5 will likely require new hardware (although firmware updates have been offered in the past), so expect it to start appearing in mobile devices within the next couple of months.
