AMD to fix Radeon RX 480 power consumption problem with driver update

AMD has stated that it will fix the Radeon RX 480’s power problems with an upcoming driver update, reports Toms Hardware.

Reviewers and consumers recently reported that the Radeon RX 480 was displaying severe power consumption issues.

The main problem displayed by the Radeon RX 480 was a worryingly high PCIe slot power draw.

This means that the graphics card pulls an abnormally high amount of power through the PCIe slot on the motherboard, which could potentially result in system instability and even damage to the motherboard itself.

AMD has since issued the following statement regarding the issue:

As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5.

Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal.

Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU’s tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).

Although the ability to fix the power issues via a driver update comes as a relief to most consumers, the impact the “GPU tunings” will have on performance is currently unknown.
