Mobile gaming revenue is set to overtake the revenue generated by PC and Console games, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

A study published by Newzoo showed that smartphone and tablet games are expected to represent 37% of worldwide software sales, with PC games and console games only comprising 32% and 31% respectively.

Although the majority of popular mobile games are free to download, they are designed to gain income by implementing mechanics such as micro-transactions and advertising.

Newzoo said that mobile gaming is the main focus of every gaming company’s strategy.

The main causes behind mobile growth are multiplayer-based games such as Clash of Clans.

Although mobile gaming is surpassing PC and console game sales, all three platforms are experiencing strong growth which will be supported by the rising popularity of VR devices.
