South Africa’s youth have rated WhatsApp as the coolest app and social media platform in the 12th annual Sunday Times Generation Next youth survey.

Where apps like Twitter, BlackBerry Messenger, and MXit lost favour among South Africa’s youth, WhatsApp’s cool could not be contained.

Times Media said it polled the opinions of 5,500 young urban South Africans (aged 8–22) to establish which brands are “the coolest of the cool in 2016”.

Overall coolest brand was awarded to Nike, with Samsung, Apple, and Xbox making an appearance in the top 10. Samsung also won in the categories for coolest cellphone and computer brand.
