Director Kevin Tancharoen finally sees his vision realised with a nine-episode live action web series based on the Mortal Kombat universe.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy began as a self-produced short film which Tancharoen shopped around until it was finally picked up by Warner Bros (who also handily own the Mortal Kombat IP). The timing couldn’t have been better, with great marketing potential as Mortal Kombat 9 is set to hit retail soon.
The Mortal Kombat: Legacy series will delve into some character development and explore the background and motivations of the Mortal Kombat characters. The series stars Jeri Ryan as Sonia, 300’s Darren Shahlavi as Kano, Tahmoh Penikett as Kurtis Stryker and Michael Jai White as Jax.
The visual style is a rather visceral and stylised take on the Mortal Kombat universe – a far cry from the 1995 original full-length film. Tancharoen himself boasts a portfolio somewhat out of sync with the Mortal Kombat universe – he was a dance choreographer for Madonna and Britney Spears, and directed the remake of the movie Fame.
Tancharoen stated in an interview with Kotaku: “I’ve been in the performing arts genre so long. I felt like if anyone was going to give me a chance to do something different, I had to do it myself first.”
Tancharoen wanted to break into horror and action genres, but had a particular fondness for Mortal Kombat.
