Gears of War 3 wasn’t leaked, it was hosted on an unsecured server

8 July 2011

Over the last weekend, copies of a mostly complete dev build of Gears of War 3 turned up on the torrents, prompting Epic and Microsoft to get the cops involved in what appeared to be an inside leak or even a hack job.

Now it looks like the game might have been downloaded (at least originally) from a server that was not login- or password-protected, where it was hosted by Codify, a company who lists Microsoft as a client, and was already hosting a range of Xbox promotional material for the Australasian market. Even worse, the server’s contents turned up on a Google search.

That was all up until very, very recently, when a French developer spotted the link in the wilds, and told the world about it. The content has subsequently been yanked.

While it’s pretty standard practice to host dev builds for remote press access and such, it’s obviously not standard practice to do so with no security whatsoever.

I’d hate to be a Codify employee today.
