Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the pricing on games for its upcoming portable console, the PlayStation Vita.
The device will ship in the US for US$250, and a local retail price has yet to be confirmed by Sony.
In Japan, Vita well sell for ¥25,000, which works out to around US$326.
Japanese site Famitsu has published pricing details for Vita games, listing Uncharted: Golden Abyss at ¥5,980 for the cartridge version and ¥4,900 for the download version.
That works out to about $78 and $63 each, which has led many to assume that the games will sell for $59, while the download version will cost $49, which is pretty much in line with what retailers charge for console games.
From this we can infer that PS Vita games will cost roughly the same as regular console games.
There are, however, other games listed for less, such as Ridge Racer which will cost ¥3,980 for the cartridge version and ¥3,580 for the download version. This puts them closer to the $40 mark.
While no US or Europe prices have been confirmed for the Vita, Sony has previously confirmed that the games will be region-free, which means that it will be possible to buy games in the US and play them on a Vita bought from a PAL region, such as Europe or South Africa.
It also means that we will be able to import games from anywhere in the world, which may keep prices across different regions in line with each other.
We contacted local Sony distributor Ster Kinekor for comment, but they did not get back to us by the time of publication.
