Carmack blames PS3 for poor performance

16 October 2011

John Carmack’s RAGE hasn’t had what you would call a smooth release, with it being essentially picked apart on all platforms due to sub-par performance. The PC version in particular was met with the most disappointment; Carmack blamed ATI and Nvidia for poor drivers. Now he’s pointing fingers again, saying the poor performance on the PS3 is being limited by the console’s hardware.

A frustrated customer asked him on Twitter, “John, Pls be professional an give us ps3 customers a heads up. If u cant do anything then just let us know, this is ridiculous!” [sic]

Carmack replied, “we don’t know of anything we can do to improve ps3 performance much, especially on wasteland. Tight memory, poor IO performance.”

Carmack certainly isn’t one to hold back, and has frequently been in the news recently for his scathing comments. Just yesterday on Twitter he said the following, “I can make benchmarks that will show either the PS3 or 360 to be superior, so they are close, but I prefer the trades on the 360.”

He’s made his preference of the Xbox 360 quite clear, calling the Playstation 3 “the second best console ever made”. In addition, he also had this to say:

“The PS3 does lag a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it. The rasteriser is just a little bit slower – no two ways about that. The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. Processing wise, the main CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that’s where a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3.”

Being a big name in the industry his words certainly have an impact, although one has to wonder if people aren’t a little disgruntled with all his excuses and finger-pointing, considering the across-the-board poor reception of RAGE. You know what they say about the workman who blames his tools, John.
